Weather could be a factor for the Greenville Lions soccer tournament set for Thursday through Saturday at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
The weather for previous tournaments has been bone-chilling cold.
The weather forecast for this weekend’s tournament calls for chilly temperatures along with thunderstorms on Thursday, strong thunderstorms on Friday and a high temperature of 44 degrees on Saturday with a low of 30.
Six girls teams are entered including the defending champion Greenville Lady Lions, plus Sherman, Ferris, Terrell, Crandall and Quinlan Ford.
Eight boys teams are entered. Joining host Greenville are Seagoville, Ellison, Chapel Hill, Pittsburg, the Greenville junior varsity, Community and Kaufman.
The Lady Lions took last year’s title with 1-0 victory over Terrell in the finals. Kayle DeLeon scored the only goal with 21:03 remaining off an assist by Elizabeth Sanchez.
The Lions fell 5-2 to west Mesquite in the finals of the 2019 tournament after beating the Wranglers 4-2 in the first round. Greenville beat West Mesquite in the finals of the 2018 tournament.
The Lady Lions are scheduled to open play in the tournament at 9:20 a.m. on Thursday against Ferrell. They’re also to play Terrell at 6:40 p.m.
The Lions’ first game is planned for 8 p.m. Thursday against Seagoville.
