FORNEY — Two touchdowns by Royse City fullback Payton Petroff in the second and third periods were all the Bulldogs would need to topple the Forney Jackrabbits 14-9 at City Bank Stadium on Friday night.
Following a 0-0 deadlock in the first period, the two old foes squared off again to start the second quarter.
In the first series, there were seven penalties total on both teams. It was settling in to be one of those nose-to-the-grindstone contests when Forney finally got a leg up, no pun intended, as Matthew Huffman booted a 42-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead for the Jackrabbits.
Both teams went three and out before the Bulldogs Tyson Oliver connected with Trey Francis on a 62-yard pass completion down to the Forney 3-yard line. Two plays later Petroff scored his first TD on a 2-yard run. Anthony Ortiz kicked the extra point for a 7-3 Bulldog lead that would carry into halftime.
The second half began with the Bulldogs intercepting a pass and then taking control of the football. A 16-play drive helped by a couple sizable penalties against Forney and some hard runs by Isaiah Nix set Petroff up again on the 2-yard line where he pushed it in for the touchdown. Ortiz’s kick was true for the PAT and a 14-3 Royse City lead.
Forney’s top tailback, Sean Stephens, broke loose on a 51-yard scamper for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, the two-point conversion failed as the Jackrabbits trailed 14-9.
Royse City’s defense then stymied a couple of Forney’s comeback threats as the District 8-5A-II victory went to the Bulldogs, who improved to 2-2 for the season and 1-1 in District 8-5A-II play. Forney dropped to 1-4 and 1-2.
