Though they’re in different districts now, the Greenville Lady Lions and Longview Pine Tree Lady Pirates are certainly no strangers in volleyball.
The two teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in a Class 5A bi-district playoff at Mineola High School.
Greenville won the District 15-5A title on Tuesday with a convincing 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Lindale, the team they had been tied with for first place. That victory gave the Lady Lions a 27-13 season record and a 9-1 district mark.
Pine Tree went 15-24 in the regular season and 6-8 in District 16-5A to finish fourth behind 13-1 Hallsville, 12-2 Whitehouse and 11-3 John Tyler of Tyler.
Pine Tree and Greenville were in the same volleyball district for several years and have met seven times since 2014. Pine Tree won all seven matches.
Sam Sommerfield leads the Lady Pirates for the season with 224 kills and Malaeka Wilson has 197 and Jamaya Davis has 85.
Sommerfield also leads Pine Tree’s defense with 298 kills, while Hannah Berry has 295 and Taitum Barry has recorded 261.
Jayde Sickels leads the Lady Lions with 409 kills, heading into a warmup match with Commerce on Friday. Kelsi McNair’s recorded 323 kills and Alyssa Mitchell has 89.
Sydney Walker tops the setters in assists with 612 and Carley Cathey has recorded 284.
Sickels leads the Lady Lions’ defense with 382 digs. Libero MaCayla Bush is next with 294, while Walker’s recorded 238, Cathey has 126 and Maci Williams has 121. — Steve Shwarts contributed to this story.
