Greenville Christian School’s Lady Eagles will be stepping up and looking up as they head into the area round of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools’ Class 2A basketball playoffs.

The 20-10 Lady Eagles, who are ranked 18th among the state’s small private schools, will take on No. 5 Waco Texas Christian at 7 tonight in Avalon.

Waco Texas Christian’s lineup features four players standing 6 feet or taller and one that is 6-3.

The Lady Eagles have one starter at 5-11, Ashley Flint. Their other four starters are 5-5 or shorter.

Waco Texas Christian has more than just height, according to Lady Eagles’ coach Hayden Flowers.

“They’re the best 2A team I’ve seen this year,” he said.

Waco Texas Christian opened the playoffs by routing Austin Hill Country 60-32.

The Lady Eagles won their bi-district playoff game by a 52-38 margin over Shady Grove of Grand Prairie. Ashlee Draughn, who’s a 5-4 junior, led GCS with 16 points and 5-1 junior Kathleen Heine shot in 15 points. Missy McDaniel tossed in eight points, while Flint added seven, Laura Stuart produced four and Emily Howell tossed in two.

The GCS-Waco Texas Christian winner advances to the regional tournament on Saturday at Southwestern University in Georgetown to play the winner between San Antonio Trinity and Tomball Rosehill.
