LINDALE — Greenville sophomore Austin Heatherly earned a regional berth, while Texas High of Texarkana claimed top honors at the District 15-5A golf tournament on Tuesday.
Heatherly fired a six-over 78 on Tuesday at Garden Valley Golf Club to go with Monday’s 76 to qualify for regional with his 36-hole total of 154. The Region II-5A tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club.
“Big day for Austin,” said Lions coach Don Johnson. “I was proud of him.”
It was also a big day for Texas High as the Tigers and Lady Tigers took both the team championships as well as the two medalist crowns.
Garrett May of Texarkana shot a hole-in-one on the way to a six-under 66 to run away with the boys individual title. May, who aced No. 4, finished with a 136 total, including a 70 on Monday.
Reed Fisher of Longview shot a 69 on Tuesday to finish with a 143 total. Fisher wound up second among the individuals and also claimed a regional berth.
Texas High fired a 286 on Tuesday to win the boys team title by 24 strokes with its total of 590. Sulphur Springs also earned a trip to the region tournament by finishing second.
The Greenville Lions cut two strokes off Monday’s score to shoot a 321 and finish fourth in the boys team standings with a 644. Senior Jonathon DeGarso was the Lions’ second low shooter (80-81-161), followed by senior David Weaks (81-81-162), freshman Tyler Crumpton (86-81-167) and freshman Wesley Crumpton (86-86-172).
“We’d like to have been a little tougher today and gotten third place,” said Johnson.
Texas High’s Emma Edwards (77-79-156), Camryn Parsons (79-79-158) and Hannah Brantley (80-78-158) finished one-two-three to lead the Lady Tigers to the team championship with their 641 total. Hallsville claimed the other regional berth with a 695 total.
The Greenville Lady Lions finished sixth with a 1040 total. Emily McGee (126-130-256) led the Lady Lions, followed by Allison Ozarowski (135-124-259), Lauren McManus (131-129-260) and Riley Weeks (135-131-266). Olivia Littlefield, who shot a 134 for the Lady Lions on Monday, joined the Lions’ tennis team for its district tournament on Tuesday.
Johnson said it’ll be tough replacing the Lions’ two seniors, DeGarso and Weaks, who helped Greenville win two tournaments this season, plus finish second in two more tourneys and third in another.
“Not a bad year,” said Johnson.
