Weather permitting, the Greenville Lady Lions will play their final preseason softball scrimmages today at Monty Stratton Field behind Greenville High School.

Light rain is in the local weather forecast, which could affect the Lady Lions’ scrimmages set for 4:30 p.m. against North Lamar and 7 p.m. against Mount Vernon. North Lamar and Mount Vernon are also scheduled to play at 5:50 p.m.

The Lady Lions had two scrimmages against Athens and Royse City canceled because of icy conditions.

They outscored Royse City 4-2 in one scrimmage and Sulphur Springs outscored the Lady Lions 2-0 in another scrimmage here Tuesday night.

Greenville right-hander Holly Patterson allowed only three hits and two unearned runs against Sulphur Springs while striking out eight.

“She was on,” said Lady Lions coach Frank Colvert.

Second baseman Ali Trower led the Lady Lions at the plate with a double.

Trower and Patterson are returning starters off last year’s team along with catcher Kayla Martinez.

Newcomer Hayley Ellis has been working at first base for the Lady Lions, with juniors Michelle McClure and Melissa Bird at shortstop and Erica Garcia at third. Nikki Rogers has been playing left field for the Lady Lions, with Marny Williams in center. Michelle Blankenship and Brandy Jullian have been taking turns in right field.

Today’s scrimmage is the Lady Lions’ last scheduled tuneup before they officially open the season on Tuesday in Athens.
