LaQuinta Ross and Jordan Pitts both won three events to lead the Greenville Lady Lions and Lions in their 2007 season track and field debut on Saturday.

Ross captured three firsts, a fifth and a sixth in the girls division as the Lady Lions finished second to Dallas Lincoln in the team standings at the Dr. Napoleon Lewis Invitational at Sprague Stadium.

Ross leaped 18 feet 3 inches to win the long jump and also soared 37-9 1/4 to claim the triple jump. Ross also captured the 200-meter dash at 26.49 seconds. Ross also ran second leg on the Lady Lions’ 4x200 and 4x100 relays that finished fifth (1:48.52) and sixth (50.90).

Pitts managed three firsts, a third and a fifth for the Lions, who were fourth in the boys team standings. Pitts won both hurdle races, taking the 110s at 14.20 and the 300s at 39.94 and also claimed the triple jump at 41-7 1/4. Pitts also finished third in the 200-meter dash ( 23.73) and was fifth in the long jump (20-10).

Gabby McCormick also claimed seconds for the Lady Lions in the shot put (35-8) and discus (103-11).

Rocio Medrano was second for the Lady Lions in the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (34-8 1/4).

The Lions also picked up seconds from Chris Carter in the 400-meter dash (52.63), Pearson McIntire in the shot put (43-1) and Byron Bell in the discus (127-5).

“With the kids that went I was pleased with the effort that we gave,” said Patrick Harvell, in his debut as head track and field coach for GHS.

Harvell said he’s “still disappointed” that the two teams still don’t have the number of athletes needed to compete in all the relay events. GHS is missing some athletes because of injuries, some to grades and some who were expected to participate in track and field chose not to do so.
