The 2006 high school soccer season will be kicking into high gear soon.

Greenville’s Lady Lions tied Terrell 2-2 and nipped Dallas Woodrow Wilson 2-1 in two preseason scrimmages on Monday at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium, while the Greenville Lions will scrimmage tonight in Sulphur Springs as both GHS teams prepare for next week’s season openers.

Sierra Rodriguez scored three goals on Monday to lead the Lady Lions. She scored on a free kick and a penalty kick against Terrell and on a penalty kick versus Woodrow Wilson. Rachael Corley scored the Lady Lions’ other goal against Woodrow Wilson.

Greenville coach Catherine Just said her team “did fine.”

“It’s the first game so there’s lots of mistakes,” she said. “We definitely played better against Woodrow Wilson than we played against Terrell.”

The Lady Lions are returning 10 starters off last year’s team that went 10-13.

Greenville’s Lions are returning six regulars off last year’s 19-6-1 district champions that advanced to the Class 4A regional semifinals.

Though they lost the district’s most valuable player, Adam Ratcliff, to graduation along with the co-offensive MVP of the district, Jon Harrison, the Lions are returning four first-team all-district selections, forward Jonathan Tapp, midfielder Thomas Tapp, defender Cory Vines and goalkeeper Shane Sickels, plus second-team selections Gerardo Flores and Hervey Vasquez.

“I think we’re going to be pretty good,” said Lions coach Kevin Wright.

Wright said the Lions will be without Flores, who fractured a foot in practice, but are getting Eloy Uribe (collarbone) back from an injury.

The Lions’ junior varsity will scrimmage the Sulphur Springs juniors at 5:30 this afternoon. The varsity scrimmage is to start at 7 p.m.

Greenville’s junior varsity will also scrimmage at McKinney North on Thursday afternoon and the Lions’ varsity will be holding a four-team scrimmage with Mount Pleasant, Sulphur Springs and Mesquite Poteet starting at 5 p.m. on Friday at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.

Commerce’s Tigers, who have a new head coach with Travis Grasser, are scheduled to scrimmage at Lindale this afternoon, starting with the junior varsity action at 4:30 p.m.

The Tigers’ previous head soccer coach Chad Howard is now coaching volleyball at Lakeview Centennial in Garland.
