Both Greenville varsity soccer teams will put 2-0 district records on the line as they face two tough teams from Mesquite Poteet tonight.

The 8-3-1 Lions, who are ranked No. 7 in Region II-4A, will entertain the fifth-ranked Pirates at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium. Game times are at 5:30 and 7 p.m. for the junior varsity and varsity matches.

The 7-5 Lady Lions will travel to Mesquite Memorial Stadium to face an undefeated Poteet team that is ranked fifth in Region II-4A by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches. Scheduled game times are also at 5:30 and 7 p.m. for the junior varsity and varsity contests.

The Lions will be facing the Pirates for the fourth time in two seasons. Last year Poteet won 4-1 on its home field and the Lions prevailed 1-0 in Greenville. Greenville then beat the Pirates 3-1 in the regional quarterfinals at Eagle-Mustang Stadium in Richardson.

Lions coach Kevin Wright said it gets “kind of physical” when Greenville and Poteet hook up in soccer. Poteet graduated six seniors off last year’s team, including two who are now with NCAA Division I universities, according to Wright.

The Pirates may have lost some seniors but their defense hasn’t been giving up many goals.

“They’re very good defensively,” said Wright. “I think for the most part the games they’ve given up a couple of goals, he (Poteet’s head coach) took a chance. “

Wright said the Pirates gave up three goals in a loss to Longview Pine Tree but in most games this season Poteet has allowed one goal or less.

The Pirates are 1-1 in district, including a 2-1 win over Terrell and a 2-1 loss to Wylie, which is ranked No. 1 in Region II-4A.

The defending District 14-4A champion Lions blanked Forney 3-0 in the district opener and then downed Kaufman 3-1 on Friday night.

Ramon Martinez scored two goals in each victory, upping his team-high total to 15 goals for the season. Thomas Tapp scored one goal in each game.

Jonathan Tapp, Thomas’ twin brother, leads the Lions with 10 assists.

The Lady Lions won their two district games by scores of 4-0 over Forney and 2-1 over Kaufman. Sierra Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal against Kaufman on a penalty kick with 8:25 remaining. Brooklyn Parker also scored for Greenville.

Poteet’s 10-0-2 Lady Pirates blanked Terrell 3-0 and Wylie 2-0 in their two district matches. They’ve scored three or more goals in seven games.

“I hear they’re pretty fast,” said Lady Lions coach Catherine Just.

Just said her players will give good effort.

“They’re going to play hard and as best as they can,” she said. “It’d be nice for a big upset.”
