NACOGDOCHES — Campbell’s surprising run up the Class A girls basketball playoff ladder ended on Friday with a 63-44 loss to Crowell in the Division II Region III semifinals.

The loss ended the Lady Indians’ season at 20-12 while 23-4 Crowell heads to today’s noon finals to face Kennard, which won its semifinal 57-40 over Strawn. The winner of that game advances to the state tournament in Austin.

“If you’re going to get beat, get beat at Austin or regionals,” said Campbell coach Steve Guffey. “They have nothing to hang their head about. They did a great job this year. We’ve made the playoffs five years in a row now. This year we finally made the regionals.”

Campbell kept it close for much of the first half. It was tied at 14-14 after the first quarter.

“Then with about two minutes to go in the half they stole it three times in a row,” said Guffey. “Hit a 3-pointer right at the buzzer at halftime. We just looked like we were in slow motion the rest of the game.”

That big 3-pointer gave Crowell a 33-24 halftime lead. The Lady Wildcats then stretched their lead to 50-31 entering the last quarter.

Campbell shot 40 percent from the field (18-of-45) but gave up 33 turnovers against Crowell’s press.

“We shot the ball pretty decently,” said Guffey. “We just didn’t get enough shots off.”

Jessica Barker managed 21 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots to lead the Lady Indians.

Kelly Ross, who was 5-of-11 from the field, added 12 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Britney Haas hit two 3-pointers for six points for Campbell and Katie Ross managed four steals.

Haley Parsley led the Lady Wildcats with 22 points. Brittany Simmons chipped in 15 points and Sylvia Perez addded 12.

Ryan Seale also fired in 12 points, while Dylan Combs and Justin Gustafson both added 10 points as the Indians finished the season at 22-8.

Thomas led the victors with 33 points and McClure added 27.

“The kids played extremely well,” said Felmet. “Never gave up. They had a great year.”
