The Texas state high school girls’ playoffs were in high gear Monday night with one local team, Bland, advancing while another, Royse City, had its season come to a close.

The Bland Lady Tigers poured it on in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game and wallop Valley View 33-21 in a Bi-District playoff game played in Howe Monday night.

Bland staked out a slim 8-7 margin after one quarter thanks to three points each from Anne Waidelich and Morgan McNatt.

But the teams were knotted up at halftime 14-14 in a defensive slugfest. And the two were still locked in a tight one-point game heading into the fourth quarter with the Tigers up 19-18.

Then Bland found the offense behind five points from Anne Waidelich, as she and her Tiger teammates tossed in 14 points, while stifling Valley View to three points in the period to take the 33-21 victory.

“I’m proud of the girls and the way they responded for us to get a playoff win,” said Bland coach Rick Tidwell. “We’re looking forward to playing in Area.”

Waidelich led Bland with 11 points, followed by McNatt with 9 and Hannah Black and Jessica Feagin with 4 each. Ashley Wilhide added 3 points and Rachael Spear had two to round out the Bland scoring.

Bland will play in the Area playoffs on Friday against an as yet undetermined opponent.

Royse City fell in it’s playoff game to state 8th-ranked Princeton in a game played in Mesquite.
