The Greenville Lions kept their playoff hopes alive with a 63-51 District 15-5A basketball win over Royse City on Friday at the Lions Den.

  The Lions are now 26-8 overall and 3-4 in district after snapping a four-game losing streak.

  “I learned a lot about my team tonight,” said Greenville coach Chris Williams. “Our backs were against the wall and we came out successful. I’m proud of the way we played on defense. I loved the way we shared the basketball tonight. Lindale will be another tough game on Tuesday.”

  Three Lions scored in double figures as Jeremiah Abrego fired in 25 points, Quin Anderson banked in 14 points and Cameron Smith tallied 10.

  Donovan Alexander hit 14 points to lead Royse City. Michael Alphin banked in 12 points, all on 3-point baskets, while Nehemiah Washington tallied 11 and Gavin Alexander 10 for the Bulldogs.

  Royse City is now 10-13 overall and 1-6 in district.

  “They (Greenville) played harder than us,” said Royse City coach Brian Jacobs.

  The Bulldogs will host Mount Pleasant on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. while Greenville will travel to Lindale for a 7:30 p.m. game with the Eagles.

  Greenville led 10-9 after the first quarter, but then outscored the Bulldogs 19-11 to lead 29-20 at halftime.

  Anderson, Carter and Abrego along with Marcus Hawkins all scored big points for Greenville in the second quarter.

  Both teams scored 16 points apiece in the third leaving Greenville with a 45-36 advantage after three quarters.

  No. 8 Royse City rolled to an 80-18 victory over the Greenville Lady Lions in District 15-5A girls basketball at the Lions Den on Friday.

  Royse City is now 26-5 overall and 9-0 in district, while Greenville fell to 3-25 and 1-8 .

  It was Senior Night at the Lions Den and Greenville honored three seniors: Emily Saenz, Ashanti Wilson and Azaria Mapps in pre-game ceremonies.

  Royse City spread the scoring around. Maggie Hutka banked in 20 points, McKenna Anderson fired in 15, while Kyla McMinn and Maci Bookout each tallied 14 and Nicole Weaver recorded 13.

  Ashanti Wilson led the Lady Lions with nine points. Cierra Baysinger recorded three, while Mapps and Brooke Hutchings tallied two each.

  “A good team win,” said Royse City coach Dallas Bookout. “Maggie Hutka was big for us all night. We had five in double figures tonight. It was great balance for us.”

  “I thought we could have done a lot better,” said Greenville coach Erica Delley. “We’ve got to finish the season strong at Lindale on Tuesday.”

  Greenville will travel to Lindale to take on the Lady Eagles in a 6:15 p.m. game on Tuesday in the season finale,

  Royse City will host Mount Pleasant on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

  MERIT — The Bland Lady Tigers clinched at least a share of the District 13-2A title with a 31-30 win over Celeste on Friday.

  The Lady Tigers are now 25-4 for the season and 7-0 in district play. They can clinch the district title outright with a win on Tuesday over Wolfe City.

  Connie Hughes led Bland with 20 points. Jessica Wooten pulled down five rebounds.

  Taylor Hervey led the victors with 14 points, while Manny Diaz shot in 11 and Gabe Butler added 10.

  Damon Crook led the Blue Devils and all scorers with 19 points. Thomas Powell fired in 14 points.
