The 2012 Texas A&M University-Commerce football team will wrap up spring training at 2 p.m. today in the annual Blue-Gold game at Memorial Stadium.
The game will feature the offense versus the defense as the Lions practice game situations for the last time before reporting for summer camp in August.
Following the game, attendees will be able to meet members of the team at the Lion Spring Cookout. Tickets for the cookout cost $10 and will be available beginning Saturday afternoon.
The Lions will look to rebound from a disastrous 2011 season that saw them lose their first eight games and finish in the Lone Star Conference cellar with a 1-9 record, 1-7 in LSC play.
The 2012 season looks to be as difficult, including a game against Division I FBS opponent UT-San Antonio in the Alamodome on Sept. 8. A&M-Commerce will compete in the second annual LSC Football Festival on Sept. 14 against Midwestern State, the team that defeated the Lions 63-17 last year and won the LSC. The Lions will open their season against Southeastern Oklahoma.
Head coach Guy Morriss will have to replace some key players from last year’s squad, including defensive captain Cory Whitefield, who led the Lions in tackles and was named to the All-LSC second team, and wide receiver Taylor Fore, who tied an A&M-Commerce record with 58 receptions in 2011.
The Lions signed 23 players in their 2012 signing class, including five quarterbacks and seven defensive backs.
