Among safest in Texas

A recent report found that Royse City is one of the safest cities in Texas.

ROYSE CITY — A recent report found that Royse City is one of the safest cities in Texas.

Royse City was ranked the 18th safest city out of nearly 200 ranked cities and received a numerical score of 84.35.

Security Baron, a security-based review, comparison and news site, analyzed FBI crime rate rankings to find the top 50 safest cities in the state and their safety score. Public Information Officer for the Royse City Police Department, Darnell Franklin, attributes the ranking in part to the community.

“We attribute it to a wonderful community that’s heavily involved in so many ways,” Franklin said. “The old saying ‘It takes a village’ comes to mind from the outpouring of support seen throughout the community of Royse City.”

Franklin further added that the department’s involvement in the community through events like their National Night Out can help improve and increase safety throughout the city.

“The men and women at our police department are actively involved in the community in various programs such as National Night Out, Neighborhood Watch, Coffee with Cops, Basketball with Cops, Thanksgiving Meal Drive, Christmas Toy Drive, Police Exploring (to launch November 2019), Main Street Events, chamber of commerce, and the Church Alliance to name a few.”

The report indicated that Royse City had a violent crime rate of 1.51 per 1,000 residents and a property crime rate of 9.92 per 1,000 residents.

“As much as we would like to think we control crime, unfortunately we don’t,” Franklin said. “However, we strive to deter and confront crime through proactive programs, community awareness, communication with citizens and merchants, to work together as a team. We rely on solid relationships with everyone in our community to be successful.”

Rankings for the list were found by compiling information from the FBI’s 2016 and 2017 Uniform Crime Reporting data and included specific rates for crime like murder, theft, vehicle theft, assault, burglary, rape and arson while also including the population and median income.

“Theft or violence can occur ‘in the nick of crime’ and no one is immune,” Gabe Turner of Security Baron said in a statement. “Although it is difficult to predict when crime will occur, it is vital to ensure the area you are visiting or moving to is secure and not infamous for any sort of criminal behavior.”

Neighboring cities that also were on the top 50 list were Sachse at 21st and Anna 22nd, with ratings of 84.13 and 84.09, respectively.

Meanwhile the city of Kermit located in Winkler County in West Texas, was listed as the safest city in the state with a numerical score of 91.25
