For the second year in a row, the local chapter of the American Red Cross is conducting a fund-raiser by hosting a “non-event.”
Inivitations have been mailed out cordially inviting individuals to not attend The Greenville Couch Potato Ball 2011. The “non-event” is basically a humorous approach to solicit donations.
The funds raised will benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The American Red Cross Dallas Chapter, which includes Greenville, encompasses 12 area counties.
The Dallas chapter covers 144 cities and the counties of: Collin, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro, Rains, Rockwall and Van Zandt.
Last year’s event, The Greenville Armadillo Gala 2010, was the idea of Michelle Conrad, director of the Greenville chapter of the American Red Cross.
The “non-event” sponsors are Julia and Ron Wensel, Mary Jean and Dee Hilton and Linda and Don Bolin.
According to information released by the Greenville branch of the Red Cross, there were 49 home fires, floods, tornadoes and other disastes that forced local officials to provide immediate relief for 164 local residents. Local Red Cross volunteers also provided food and drinks for 554 emergency responders as they responded to wildfires and search and rescue efforts in the county.
