Supporters of the Doctors Creek Park on Cooper Lake are hoping to raise some funds for the site, and even plan to sweeten the deal for those wanting to contribute.

The Delta County World Champion Pie and Ice Cream Cookoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Delta County Civic Center in Cooper. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Doctors Creek Park.

“All of the benefits will go toward Doctors Creek Park,” explained organizer Gracie Young.

The Doctors Creek Unit is one of two parks which combine to make up the Cooper Lake State Park. Doctors Creek is located on the northeast side of the lake and includes a sandy beach, a nature trail, campsites, and playground areas., as well as a boat ramp, amphitheater and parking.

Young said this the first time the group has put on a fundraiser of this type.

“We’ve had an ice cream social before,” she said.

Anyone can enter the championship with any recipe of pie or homemade ice cream.

“It is $1 for each pie or $1 for each freezer of ice cream,” Young said, while admitting the term “cookoff” really doesn’t apply for the ice cream entries.

“That is more of a freeze-off, I guess you could call it,” Young said.

The best ice cream entries will receive $50 for first place, $25 for second place and $10 for third.

“The same prizes will go for the best pies,” Young noted.

Those who attend the event probably get the best deal.

“You can buy a bowl and sample any or all of it for $5,” she said.

Those wanting to enter, or who may want more information, can call Young at 903-395-4314, or through e-mail at
