Republican State Senator Bob Deuell of Greenville won re-election Tuesday, easily overcoming a bid by Libertarian Dennis Kaptain of Mesquite.

Deuell represents Senate District 2, which includes Hunt, Delta, Hopkins, Rockwall, Kaufman, Fannin, Rains, and Van Zandt counties, plus parts of Dallas and Smith counties.

With 258 of 322 precincts across the district reporting late Tuesday night, Deuell had claimed 75,429 votes (78.9 percent) to Kaptain’s 20,133 (21.06 percent).

In Hunt County, Deuell received 12,140 votes (78.52 percent) to Kaptain’s 3,322 percent (21.48 percent).

“I’m so very honored to have had so much support across the district,” Deuell said. “I’m really looking forward to the next four years.”

Although the next regular session of the Texas Legislature doesn’t begin until January, Deuell said he has been making weekly trips to Austin for committee hearings which were missed due to the multiple special sessions on education reform.

“We’re basically cramming 19 months of interim committee meetings into four months,” Deuell said.
