The Root Chakra
September is national yoga month and to kick off yoga month I am going to be discussing yoga and energy in a series of articles coming out. There are also seven weeks left in the 48 to 48 connection group and over the next the next seven weeks I will be writing articles about the seven major chakras in the body.
I often talk about chakras in yoga and in the energy work that I do but I also work with many groups that are a more corporate culture so I typically try to talk about the science behind different energy areas of our bodies as well. The chakra system is in alignment with our nervous system. It is more than that though.
The seven Main chakras are the root chakra, the sacral chakra, the solar plexus chakra, the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the third eye chakra, and the crown chakra.
Without going into too much philosophy about kundalini, life force, and Sanskrit words used in yoga I will talk more about what each area represents, the science behind it, the energy body involved in it, and some ways blocked energy in that area of your body can show up and yoga poses to help with that.
The chakras and thought of as spinning wheels of energy in the body. In this first week of this series we will talk about the first chakra which is your root chakra it is your foundation at the base of your spine. As you may guess it is what when sitting is your route to the earth. Healthy route chakra energy is believed to assist in feeling grounded. It is believed that the area of energy from your root chakra can become blocked when something is not adequate in your survival needs. This could mean poverty, job loss, Fear of not having food shelter or basic needs. The loss of security. The color associated with the root chakra is red and the indication of a block through chakra is feeling anxiety and uncertain. Basically being not grounded. It can manifest in the body as low energy, cold extremities and back pain.
How the root chakra is associated with the nervous system in the body is the adrenal system produces adrenaline which stimulate fight or flight response and our survival drive. It is also related to our basic emotional needs. This chakra is associated with the kidneys and male reproductive bits that are below the body. The root chakra gives vitality to the physical body and creates life force.
Yoga to activate the root chakra involves connecting to your physical body and activating your adrenal cortex. The focus would be on your hips your spine and lower back. Some of the yoga poses that can activate this area are easy pose, child’s pose with wide knees. Squat. Staff pose, seated forward bend pose standing forward bend. Chair pose and revolved chair.
