New YMCA committee to meet for first time Thursday

GREENVILLE — A committee which will help determine whether a new YMCA is needed in Greenville will meet for the first time this week.

An organizational meeting for the panel is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, 5501 Highway 69 South.

YMCA Executive Director Kelly Gaudreau intends to present an overview of the current YMCA and the programs it offers, as well as an outline of the agency’s needs.

The committee will also discuss the potential cost of a new facility, the pledges and commitments which have already been received, funding avenues and growth models.

The Greenville City Council voted earlier this month to approve the creation of the committee, including naming Jerry Ransom as chairman, who has been tasked with actually recruiting the committee.

The Greenville YMCA building turned 50 this year.

The fundraising campaign to build a new YMCA in Greenville was formally launched in June 2011.

The new facility is expected to cost about $8 million, with approximately half of the amount already raised or pledged. The committee would be charged with coming up with a projected cost and an income model.
