Three GCS students qualify for Dukes’ TIP

GREENVILLE — Greenville Christian School’s Headmaster Steve Bowers announced that three seventh graders qualify to enroll in Duke University‘s Seventh Grade Talent Identification Program — TIP.

Grace Cotton, Christina Roghair and Samuel Pitts qualified through last spring’s administration of the TerraNova Third Edition, a grade-level standardized achievement test given at Greenville Christian School.

To be recognized, Duke TIP requires students to score at or above the 95th percentile on an accepted subtest or total battery/composite. The different subject areas tested are mathematics, science, language arts, reading, social studies and communication.

Once students are identified, they are eligible to take either the ACT or SAT as an above-level testing experience.

This allows the TIP students to have greater insight into their academic abilities and an opportunity to preview the test they will take during the college admission process. It also helps educators and families determine how advances their students’ abilities truly are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate. Roghair is the granddaughter of Raynae and John Roghair of Greenville; Cotton is the daughter of Kimberly Cotton, also of Greenville; and Pitts is the son of Ivy and Joel Pitts of Campbell.
