GREENVILLE — Work on restoring the historic Texan Theater in downtown Greenville turned the corner a few weeks ago from demolition to renovation.

Plans are calling for a grand opening event on Dec. 31, 2013.

Barbara Horan of Austin has been responsible for the effort and has promised a venue featuring “exceptional food with remarkable entertainment.”

Horan has envisioned an intimate dinner and entertainment experience for about 250 people when the renovations are completed next year.

A “sneak peek” event was conducted earlier this month at the Dairy Manor Bed and Breakfast in Greenville.

The Texan is included among the League of Historic American Theaters and at one time was one of four downtown Greenville movie theaters, also including the Colonial, the Rialto and the Rita. The Texan was probably the last to close, sometime in the 1970s.

The theater’s marquee has been completely restored and is lit for special occasions, including the Downtown Christmas Parade, until the gala opening event.
