Forecast calls for big chill to arrive

GREENVILLE — Break out the heavy coats and sweaters from the closet, because a big chill is forecast to arrive in the area Sunday afternoon.

After a week of sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures, a major cold front is expected to bring gusty winds, frigid temperatures and even a chance for some rain.

The National Weather Service forecast was calling for a high near 69 degrees today, with winds shifting out of the north to the south by the afternoon, and a low near 60 overnight.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for the region after noon Sunday. The temperature is forecast to rise to about 70 degrees, then drop sharply the rest of the day as winds shift back out of the north, gusting as high as 20 miles per hour.

There is a slight chance of rain Sunday evening, with a low near freezing and winds gusting out of the north as high as 30 mph.

The high Monday under partly sunny skies is only expected to reach to 40 degrees, with winds gusting out of the north at up to 25 mph.
