Hurricane Ike strikes glancing blow

Five years ago today

GREENVILLE — Five years ago today, the remnants of Hurricane Ike did little more than strike a glancing blow to Hunt County.

Hundreds of evacuees from the Texas Gulf Coast remained housed in Commerce, filling emergency shelters established as the storm approached the state.

Crews from GEUS were dispatched to help restore power to one of the hardest hit areas of East Texas, but there was no word of major damage in Hunt County.

Some locations experienced wind gusts of up to 40 mph as the tropical storm passed, with phone lines and trees reported down in West Tawakoni during the afternoon.

A utility pole in the 1500 block of Jones in Greenville cracked, while a large tree branch was toppled onto a car in the 2900 block of Walnut Street.

The National Weather Service reported Majors Field Municipal Airport in Greenville received a total of 2.18 inches of rain on Sept. 13, 2008 with the highest gusts from the storm reaching 38 mph.

The county was never placed under any severe weather warnings and no significant flooding was reported as a result of the storm.

In the first few days following the passage of the storm, approximately 200 people remained housed at two emergency shelters in Commerce, where representatives from the American Red Cross, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Hunt County, and the Commerce Independent School District were tending to their needs.

GEUS sent a four-man transmission and distribution crew to Jasper, to help restore power that was lost due to wind damage.

The City of Greenville operated an Emergency Operations Center out of the Police and Courts Facility downtown, where several city officials monitored the progress of the storm, most of which passed to the east of Hunt County.
