Showing support for ‘Team Cheyenne’

A Lone Oak Middle School student will likely be celebrating reaching her teenage years in a hospital bed in Dallas, as she struggles to recover from a stubborn infection.

Friends of Cheyenne Knapp have organized a benefit in her honor, to raise funds to help her parents pay medical bills and daily expenses.

Donations are being sought for the auction event, which is scheduled at 6 p.m. November 23 at the Top Rail Cowboy Church, 262 Horseman Road, in Greenville. A donation stew supper and live entertainment are planned prior to the start of the auction.

Knapp’s supporters have started the “Team Cheyenne” Facebook page, which as of Wednesday evening had recruited more than 4,700 fans who are pulling for Cheyenne, who has been in the intensive care unit at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, battling a staph infection which has caused fluid to build up on her lungs.

Cheyenne, a seventh grader at Lone Oak Middle School, turns 13 Saturday.

Amanda Todd and Channa Waldroup are longtime family friends and helped to set up the auction and a benefit account at Alliance Bank in Greenville.

“She is always happy,” Todd said.

“That girl has a heart of gold,” Waldroup added.

Cheyenne played on the school’s volleyball team and was set to be a member of the basketball squad.

“She didn’t even get to play in game one,” Todd explained. “Her coach brought her a jersey.”

Anyone wanting to make a donation to the auction can contact Terry Driggers at 903-454-6437, Waldroup at 903-355-4389 or Todd at 903-413-6648. Donations may be dropped off at Terry Drigger’s Realty Service, 2900 Lee Street in Greenville; Ruby’s Cafe, 2308 Lee Street in Greenville, or at Todd’s Garage, 5945 State Highway 34 South in Quinlan.
