Monty Stratton Parkway will have a large increase in foot traffic on Saturday.
The Boys & Girls Club 5K walk/run is the first race to utilize the newly built parkway.
Cynthia Cornejo, event organizer and Boys & Girls Club board member, said she is excited about making use of the parkway and expects a good turnout to the event.
“We have close to 40 people that have preregistered for the race,” she said. “I took the challenge on and it’s moving along pretty quickly.”
The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Greenville SportsPark, with day-of registration running from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. Individuals can preregister at the Boys & Girls Club, located in the Reecy Davis Center on Lee Street, or any of Alliance Bank’s Greenville locations.
From the sportspark, runners will take a right on Sayle Street and run to the Interstate 30 service road where they will make another right onto Monty Stratton Parkway and run the entire length of the parkway passing between Greenville High School and Paris Junior College, Greenville campus.
From there, runners will be led to a right on Lion’s Lair and then another right onto Sayle Street and will finish the 3.2 mile run back at the sportspark.
“After the race we’ll have refreshments and will have an awards ceremony,” she said, adding that first, second and third place awards will be given to both male and female divisions.
Being an avid runner for the past two years, Cornejo said she has a few race day tips for new runners.
“5K’s are becoming very popular in recent years,” she said. Get enough rest the night before, get up a couple hours early and get a good breakfast in.”
According to the Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Texas, its mission is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”
