Trial starting in kilo of cocaine possession case

GREENVILLE — Trial is starting this week for a Bowie County man, on an indictment alleging he transported a kilo of cocaine through Hunt County during the summer of 2009.

Brandon Ray Antwine, 31, of Texarkana was indicted in January 2010 on one count of possession of a controlled substance, namely cocaine, of more than 400 grams with intent to deliver. He has pleaded not guilty.

Jury selection is scheduled in the 196th District Court this morning. The Hunt County District Attorney’s Office has subpoenaed seven witnesses to testify in the trial.

Antwine has chosen to have the jury assess his punishment, should he be found guilty.

According to a report from the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy stopped a 2002 Mercury Marauder driven by Antwine at the 98 mile marker on Interstate 30 for a traffic offense early on the morning of July 7, 2009.

A search of the car revealed seven bags of cocaine hidden in the door post of the vehicle. The bags contained 2.2 pounds of cocaine.

The charge Antwine is facing carries a maximum sentence upon conviction of from 25 to 99 years to life in prison in prison, with an optional fine of up to $100,000.
