Town hall meeting on city budget tonight

GREENVILLE — A second public meeting on the upcoming City of Greenville budget is scheduled for this evening, offering local residents another advanced look at how next year’s budget will be put together,

The Town Hall Meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, 5501 Highway 69 South in Greenville. A similar meeting was conducted on March 25.

Tonight’s meeting is designed to provide information on who is responsible for local tax dollars, what services the taxes support and why the services are necessary. Citizen input on the budget will be scheduled following the presentation.

The Greenville City Council usually begins conducting budget workshop meetings during the summer, to begin crafting the next fiscal year’s budget. A budget and tax rate must be passed by the start of the fiscal year on October 1.

The current City of Greenville budget is funded through the a property tax rate of 69.9 cents per $100 valuation, unchanged from the previous fiscal year. The budget included several cuts but increased by 50 percent the amount the city will spend on maintaining local streets.
