Grant funds available to repair select county roads

GREENVILLE — Hunt County roads that have been damaged by oil and gas pipeline drilling could be repaired due to a new grant program from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The Hunt County Commissioners Court authorized County Judge John Horn to seek to receive the up to $168,235 the county is eligible for from TxDOT. According to the grant, the county has until Feb. 14, 2014 to file for funds to receive repair on county roads.

Horn said the funds can only be received on county roads that have not been reimbursed by oil and gas companies to be repaired.

“You can’t hit the till twice,” he said.

More research needs to be done by each commissioner to verify which roads are eligible to receive reimbursement from TxDOT so the county can apply for the full amount availaible, Horn said.

“It needs to be incumbent on every commissioner to know the infrastructure that is relevant to the grant,” he said.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Jim Latham said, with all the recent oil and gas drilling that has been going on in the county, he expects a lot of roads to be eligible.

“We have a posibility of a pretty large chunk of it,” he said.

Since Horn was recently made aware of the grant, he said he will be searching into how the county will receive the funds after repairs have been made to the roads.

“Right now it’s out of my pay grade to go into detail,” he said. “We’ll get more information and move forward with that.”
