GREENVILLE — Children cannot play on a portion the Aunt Char’s Kidzone in the Greenville SportsPark, damaged in an early Sunday morning fire which is still under investigation.

City of Greenville Director of Parks and Recreation Colby VanGundy said the “railroad engine” was burned in the blaze, which was first reported at around 2 a.m. Sunday.

“It burned pretty bad and there was a slide that bubbled up from the heat,” he said. Both damaged sections of the playground remain blocked off. “Other than that it is safe for them to play.”

VanGundy met with insurance adjusters Thursday and expects to receive plans and specifications on replacement equipment soon.

“We’ll get that Monday and we’ll get to replacing that as soon as we can,” VanGundy said.

Fire Chief Doug Caison said the fire is being considered suspicious in nature, but did not immediately classify it as an arson.

“The cause is still under investigation and we are following up on that,” Caison said.

VanGundy said the playground will be as good as new once the work is completed.

“We are going to fix it,” he said.
