Local merchants still reporting brisk business

GREENVILLE — Customers spent a little more at local merchants during March, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

A report issued by the state agency Wednesday also revealed that the City of Greenville has continued to do well this fiscal year in terms of collecting sales tax rebate revenue.

The Comptroller’s office reported the City of Greenville would receive a sales tax payment of $558,515.08 this month, representing an increase of  3.7 percent from the $538,573.58 collected in May 2012, and also above the $543,450.07 taken in during May 2011.

The City of Greenville received $549,858.16 during May 2010. Local sales tax rebates set a monthly record of more than $567,000 in May 2007.

The May payment represents the city’s portion of sales taxes collected at local businesses in March and reported to the Comptroller’s office in April.

So far this fiscal year, the City of Greenville has received $2,610,883.60, representing an increase of 8.96 percent from the $2,396,055.70 collected by the city through May 2012.

The City of Greenville had taken in almost $2.36 million through the same point two years ago and almost $2.45 million through May 2010.

Sales taxes are one of the two main sources of revenue, along with property taxes, which feed the city’s general fund. A rededication of a percentage of the sales tax revenue goes toward the 4A economic development corporation.
