Taking steps for drug education

GREENVILLE — Greenville will see a large increase in pedestrian traffic on May 4.

DrugFree Greenville is hosting its 25th Anniversary Walkathon in Greenville, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Farmers Market downtown.

Atendees will be walking a four mile stretch, garnering donations from businesses and residents along the way.

More than 2,000 people are expected to be at the walk and activities after the walk.

So far, DrugFree Greenville has collected more than $50,000 in donations from businesses and citizens.

Greenville Independent School District is getting in on the donations as well. Principals and assistant principals at GISD will dress up as lunch ladies, allow themselves to be duct taped to walls and will put on makeup and kiss a pig if the various schools raise enough funds for the event.

After the walk, attendees will gather at the Farmers Market for food and entertainment.

The post-walk events will include a carnival-type atmosphere filled with face painting, bounce houses, a giant slide and obstacle course, and food from restaurants including Pizza Hut, Soulman’s and Collin Street Bakery, among others.

For more information on the event, contact DrugFree Greenville by calling 903-454-4300, or online at www.drugfreegreenville.org.
