Uniforms sought for back-to-school events

GREENVILLE — Organizers for one of next month’s two local back-to-school give-away events are asking for assistance in providing school uniforms for those who need them.

The Greenville North Community Association (GNCA) Back to School Extravaganza’s features a free uniform store where parents with their children are able to obtain at least get one new or slightly used school uniform for the first day of the fall semester.

As such, representatives with the GNCA issued an appeal Wednesday for donations of school uniforms in various sizes for students K-12th grade. The donations are needed by August 12 and organizers are asking for donation of polo shirts in red, white, black or navy blue and/or donations of pants, shorts or skirts in khaki or black.

Donations will also be accepted at Love & Faith Fellowship Church, 1009 Rees Street in Greenville on Sundays between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays between 7 and 8 p.m.; at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 6801 Wesley Street in Greenville, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday; at Wesley Chapel C.M.E. Church, 2100 Kennedy Street in  Greenville, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sundays and 6 until 7 p.m. Wednesdays; and at Grace & Mercy-Grundy Funeral Home, 2120 Hemphill Street in Greenville, between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

— The Back To School Extravaganza is sponsored each summer by the Greenville North Community Association. This year’s giveaway, for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade, is hosted by Love and Faith Fellowship Church and will take place between 9 and 11 a.m. August 24 at the Boys and Girls Club/Reecy Davis Center, 4320 Lee Street. The event will provide free school supplies, haircuts and uniforms while they last.

— The annual Tools For School event is scheduled between 8 and 10 a.m. August 10 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 6801 Wesley Street. Tools For School assists economically disadvantaged students  in kindergarten through sixth grade at Greenville Independent School District, Phoenix, Greenville Christian School and Mineral Heights campuses.

Pre-registration sign-ups for both events are scheduled August 5, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church;  on August 6 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Love and Faith Fellowship, 1009 Rees Street and from 5-7 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church; and on August 7 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Love and Faith Fellowship.

Parents must bring a copy of each student’s most current report card or Certificate of Completion for students entering Kindergarten. The student must be enrolled in Bowie, Carver, Crockett, Lamar, Travis, 6th Grade Center, Phoenix, Greenville Christian School or Mineral Heights Christian Academy.
