Entomologist: Mosquitoes to be ‘out in force’ soon

Mosquito season is officially under way in North Texas.

“Mosquitoes should be coming out in force during the next few days,” said Larry Novy, a board certified entomologist with Arrow Exterminators of Dallas.

Novy said his company has several customers in the Greenville area and noted he is expecting the mosquito population to swell with the arrival of warm, humid air following the recent heavy rains.

“There’s going to be a lot of standing water out there,” Novy said. “Those are all potential mosquito breeding sites.”

With the infestation of mosquitoes comes fears of the spread of the West Nile virus. Hunt County had 15 cases of people infected with the West Nile virus last summer, with no fatalities, and at least one case has been reported locally so far in 2013.

“Folks need to start taking precautions,” Novy said.

He recommended homeowners check around their residences and remove any locations of collected water, such as in flower pots or puddles.

“If they have a large pool of standing water, they may need to look at larvicide materials,” Novy said.

He also suggested installing screens on all windows of the home and making sure to wear protective clothing and insect repellent when venturing outside.

“Especially at dark and early in the morning, that’s when mosquitoes are the most active,” Novy said.

Yards should be kept well trimmed and litter free, as Novy said mosquitoes like to escape the heat of the day by hiding in tall grass and landscaping. Preventative methods are best, he said, but once a problem is noticed in a given location, it should be treated at least monthly to keep the mosquito population in check.

“We are assuming it is going to be a pretty big year this year,” Novy said.
