City manager's contract on the line at Tuesday City Council meeting

GREENVILLE — The passage Saturday of one of the amendments to the City of Greenville Charter may be used Tuesday evening to terminate the contract of Greenville City Manager Steven Alexander.

The Greenville City Council is scheduled to consider Alexander’s employment during an executive session as part of Tuesday's regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street.

Place 1 Council member Dan Perkins is hosting a meeting at his office tonight, seeking support for Alexander, in light of the apparent effort to remove the city manager from his position.

As has been the case during several Council meetings in recent months, Alexander’s contract is to be addressed in executive session under Section 551.074 of the Local Government Code, which allows the committee “to deliberate the appointment, employment, evaluation, reassignment, duties, discipline, or dismissal of a public officer or employee; or to hear a complaint or charge against an officer or employee.”

Specifically the Council intends to discuss exercising the city’s contractual rights under the terms of Alexander’s contract and also to discuss exercising the Council’s powers under Section 20 of the Greenville City Charter to suspend or remove the City Manager.

Of the 30 amendments approved by voters Saturday, Proposition 6 amended Section 20 of the City Charter to reflect the Council’s power to appoint and/or remove by majority the City Manager.

The Council voted in April 2012 to amend Alexander’s employment agreement, to where it would take five members of the Council, rather than four, to terminate the contract.

Should the Council take any action concerning the items addressed in executive session, it would return to open session to do so.

Perkins is asking anyone interested in showing support for Alexander to meet at his office at 5602 Wesley Street at 5:30pm. today.
