Police to have shooting gallery at Fair

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Police Department is wanting to operate a shooting gallery as part of this year’s Hunt County Fair, in an effort to teach children about gun safety.

The Greenville City Council is set to approve a permit for the gallery during Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street.

The Hunt County Fair is scheduled June 7-15.

In a memo to the Council, Police Chief Daniel J. Busken noted the department is involved in teaching gun safety and reinforcing the importance of the proper handling of firearms.

“Hands on training and education is more effective than handing out literature,” Busken said. “The Hunt County Fair will have many children in attendance and the officers have thought of a way to attract them to gun safety in the form of a shooting gallery.”

Children will be admitted to the gallery only after watching a brief gun safety video.

“The target will be a simple bull’s-eye target and will have gun safety tips bordering the outside,” Busken said. “The child then can take his or her target home. The shooting gallery will be enclosed and safety glasses will be provided. The shooting gallery will use air soft plastic bb’s and will be built to keep the projectiles inside the booth. Other gun safety education during the Hunt County Fair will consist of book marks and flyers.”

The city’s Code of Ordinances allows the Council to grant permits to shooting galleries, gun clubs and others for shooting in fixed localities and under specific rules.
