Oak Creek Park in line for renovations

GREENVILLE — Having just completed a major renovation project at the city’s oldest park, City of Greenville officials are now considering a much more modest revamp of a park at the other end of town.

The City Council voted Tuesday to issue a notice of its intent to issue up to $2.5 million in certificates of obligation, which would be used to pay for multiple efforts, including $40,000 for the renovation of Oak Creek Park.

The park located at the intersection of FM 1570 and Aerobic Lane features ball fields, grills, a jogging trail, a pavilion, playgrounds, picnic tables and restrooms and is a popular location for youth soccer games.

Parks and Recreation Director Colby VanGundy told the Council that the renovation of Oak Creek is next in line for an upgrade, following renovations at Warren Park and Graham Park.

Warren Park at 3100 Webb Avenue, close to the center of Greenville, received a state-of-the-art “playscape” in the summer of 2010, which featured the latest interactive elements, allowing children to engage in rock climbing and other endeavors before flying in the swings or heading down the slides.

Graham Park, at the north end of the city, was recently reopened after a $1 million renovation effort.

VanGundy said the Parks Board wanted to pay some attention to the south end of Greenville and decided on Oak Creek.

“The facilities that have not been replaced, they all need it,” VanGundy said.

Council member Dan Perkins agreed the renovation was overdue.

“It is a needed park and it is time,” Perkins said.

VanGundy said as much of the work, which would be similar to the upgrades at Warren Park, as possible will be done in-house to save money, but added Oak Creek Park is not the only facility needing attention.

“I get requests every day for different parks,” VanGundy Said.

The City Council is expected to vote to issue the certificates on February 12.
