Extreme drought spreading in region

An extreme drought is spreading across the region, but had not yet reached Hunt County as of this week. Hunt County remained split between a moderate and severe drought, according to the latest according to the United States Drought Monitor. The readings for the report were compiled Tuesday and released Thursday and reveal that much of Collin County, along with portions of Fannin and Lamar counties are listed under an extreme drought.

Recent rains have been enough to keep soil conditions in reasonable shape, but area lake levels continue to fall. As of the end April, Hunt County was currently more than six inches behind in rainfall for the year.

The county currently receives an average of 11.89 inches of rain through the first four months of the year. As of Friday, Hunt County had received approximately 5.79 inches of rain.

The City of Greenville obtains water from Lake Tawakoni, which as of Friday was reported at a level of 427.51 feet, 9.99 feet below the spillway. The historic low level on Tawakoni is 424.9 feet, which was set on December 29, 2006.

Cities served by the North Texas Municipal Water District — which include Royse City and Rockwall and the Caddo Basin and Cash Special Utility Districts — remain under Stage 3 outdoor watering restrictions, which means residential and business customers are limited to landscape watering with sprinkler or irrigation systems once every seven days. Other restrictions apply, depending on the city.

The City of Greenville is listed under Stage 1 water conservation measures, which calls for voluntary limits on the irrigation of landscaped areas.
