A Juneteenth observance is scheduled Saturday in Greenville.
The event, with the theme of “Hot dogs in the Park — Celebrating Texas African-American independence” — is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Graham Park and is being sponsored by the Greenville Branch of the NAACP. The Greenville Men of Valor, Greenville North Community, Corporation for Cultural Diversity of Greenville and KKVI Radio are among the co-sponsors.
Activities being planned include a basketball tournament, checkers and dominoes tournaments and more.
Volunteers are being sought for the event and those wanting additional information can call 903-455-2205.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is the remembrance of June 19, 1865, when the enslaved in Galveston received word of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.
