Board given update on YMCA

GREENVILLE — Progress is being made on the establishment of a new YMCA/event center in Greenville.

YMCA of Greenville-Hunt County CEO/Executive Director Kelly Gaudreau briefed the Greenville Board of Development/4A Economic Development Corporation Tuesday about the project, which will be built at the Greenville SportsPark on Monty Stratton Parkway.

Gaudreau said he and YMCA board member Andy Bench recently met with Greenville Mayor Steve Reid and Interim City Manager/Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim about the financial plan for the facility. Gaudreau noted a sign designating the site of the building is expected to be raised this week.

“We’re getting pretty close to the next phase, which is to go out for requests for qualifications from architects,” Gaudreau explained.

The City of Greenville would be responsible for hiring the architect.

“Then we would go to the design phase of the project,” Gaudreau said.

Last month, voters in Greenville approved the issuance of $15 million in general obligation bonds to pay for the construction of a YMCA/event center.

The facility will be owned by the City of Greenville and leased to and operated by the YMCA or other public or private entity as a commercial activity community events/recreation center. Organizers of the project said they had received commitments from several entities toward the cost of the facility which could reduce the potential tax burden. Dr. Jerry Ransom has agreed to donate $1 million through 10 annual installments of $100,000 each.
