Greenville council to discuss city manager Tuesday

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council plans to talk about a lot of different things in executive session during this week’s regular session.

The council intends to discuss the status of the city manager’s position, possible legal issues connected to the construction of the Waste Water Treatment Plant and a potential review of access to municipal government buildings.

The council is scheduled to meet in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street.

Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim was appointed in May as the interim city manager for the city of Greenville, in the wake of the Council terminating former city manager Steven Alexander’s contract.

The council has not publicly announced the start of the search process for a new, permanent city manager. Director of Human Resources Barry Robinson told the council the process could take at least four months, depending on whether the council chose to employ a search firm or employ from within.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the Council is scheduled to convene in executive session under Local Government Code Section 551.074 - Personnel Matters, which allows the Council “to deliberate the appointment and/or employment of a public officer in the City Manager position.”

The council also intends to meet under Sections 551.071(1) and (2), which allow for “Consultations with Attorney for advice on legal matters regarding Waste Water Treatment Plant construction and liquidated damages related to construction delay” and also for “Consultations with Attorney for advice on legal matters regarding city building compliance with legal standards of access and possible retention of expert for review of municipal buildings and facilities.”

Should the council take any action concerning the executive session items it would return to open session to do so.
