Hunt County road equipment damaged

GREENVILLE — Hunt County equipment in Precinct 2 sustained more than $100,000 worth of damage earlier this month.

Among the items damaged was a motor grader, a machine with a long blade that is used to level out roads, which was set on fire during the middle of the night on June 2 at the intersection of Farm Road 3211 and County Road 2114.

A total $12,000 worth of tires were burned, along with other various pieces of equipment.

“This is a pretty substantial amount of damage,” Jay Atkins, Precinct 2 Commissioner for Hunt County, said.

Lt. Roger Seals, criminal investigation lieutenant for the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department, is investigating the crime.

“This is a substantial loss,” he said. “The cab of the grader was pretty much consumed.”

Seals is waiting for lab results to come in on some of the evidence collected at the scene, but currently there is no evidence pointing to who committed the crime.

According to Atkins, although there is no evidence, by the nature of the crime it is “pretty apparent that it was a bunch of kids.”

Seals asked that anyone with any information on this crime to call the Sheriff’s Department at 903.453.6800.
