Another big, anonymous donation made for new Greenville fire engine

GREENVILLE — An anonymous donor has brought the City of Greenville even closer to paying for a new and needed fire truck.

City Manager Massoud  Ebrahim briefed the City Council Tuesday about the process of lining up funding for the truck, which is expected to cost approximately $750,000.

Ebrahim said that the same donor who chipped in $150,000 in November had agreed to contribute another $150,000, which will be added to $200,000 left over from certificates of obligation issued earlier this year.

“Right now we have half a million dollars in cash,” Ebrahim said.

Ebrahim has said he did not intend to issue debt to pay for the truck, maintaining he wanted to build on an account until it reached the $500,000 range before considering financing for another fire engine. That milestone has been reached.

“Hopefully in January we will start the process of ordering and all that,” Ebrahim said. “But I am still looking for more money.”

The council asked Ebrahim in September if a way could be found to purchase a new engine, as one of the Greenville Fire-Rescue Department’s two reserve pumper trucks, which came into service in 1993, has been the source of repeated maintenance issues.
