Guilty plea given in dog fighting ring case

GREENVILLE — A Greenville man has admitted to being a member of a local dog fighting ring.

Dakalin Dyquez Edwards also pleaded guilty to stealing a vehicle in October of last year.

Edwards, 19, entered guilty pleas during a hearing Monday in the 354th District Court to one count each of dog fighting and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Edwards entered open pleas, meaning that no plea bargain agreement had been arranged in the cases and that Edwards is subject to the full range of punishment.

Judge Richard A. Beacom accepted the pleas and scheduled a sentencing hearing for April 29.

Edwards was one of three Greenville residents indicted in connection with a dog fighting ring which had been operating in the city. Edwards received one indictment for dog fighting, alleging he incited two dogs to fight on April 8, 2013.

Edwards was also alleged to have stolen a vehicle from a female victim on Oct. 3, 2013.

Edwards is a facing a maximum sentence on the charges of up to two years in state jail, and an optional fine of up to $10,000.

Adrian OBrian Jackson of Greenville was sentenced in September to a term in state jail after pleading guilty to hosting multiple dog fighting matches at his residence.

Kavante Davis of Greenville is facing trial on the charge in June.
