Sentencing set for man's fifth armed robbery

GREENVILLE — Sentencing is scheduled this week for a local man who pleaded guilty to his fifth armed robbery.

Mark Anthony Young had been scheduled for a punishment hearing last month in the 354th District Court. But due to an ongoing jury trial in the court, the sentencing was rescheduled for Thursday.

Young, 35, of Greenville, waived a jury trial in January on a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Young was indicted on the charge by the Hunt County grand jury in August 2013.

The charge Young is facing a first degree felony, with a prior first degree felony conviction, which means Young is facing a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 99 years to life in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.

Young has already served prison time on previous convictions for armed robbery and was convicted of a federal charge of arson in connection with two set fires at Greenville churches in 1996.

Young was being held in the Hunt County Jail Friday in lieu of $150,000 bond.

According to a report from the Greenville Police Department, a robbery was reported on the morning of May 16, 2013 at the Circle G convenience store, 1700 Stonewall Street in Greenville. A male was alleged to have entered the store, displayed a weapon, and ordered the female employee at the cash register to give him money. The employee complied and the suspect left the store.

The police department’s investigation identified the suspect as Young, who was arrested without incident.
