Jail substation opens

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office South Command was declared operational Tuesday.

Sheriff Randy Meeks made the announcement from the substation at 2669 East Quinlan Parkway/State Highway 276, noting the facility is still awaiting the arrival and installation of jail cells from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which is expected in about 60 days.

“Once the cells are in place, the South Command will be a multi-functional facility,” Meeks said.

The Hunt County Commissioners Court approved the substation in October 2012. Under a lease agreement, the sheriff’s office would not pay rent for the location, but would be responsible for property taxes.

Meeks said the South Command would be used for temporarily housing arrested individuals awaiting transport to the Hunt County Detention Center in Greenville; could be used as a staging area for joint investigations involving local, state and federal authorities and, in the future, would be the base for the upcoming Citizens On Patrol program.

Meeks said the building, located just west of West Tawakoni, could also serve as a training area for jail academy and would be equipped to function as a separate communications facility during times of CRASH team events, warrant roundups and civil emergencies.

“These are just a few examples of what is intended for the South Command,” Meeks said. “The potential for the South Command is it is able to be flexible depending on the future needs of the citizens of this great county.”

Meeks thanked the owner of the property, Stan Chaney, for donating the use of the building; the Commissioners Court and especially Precinct 3 Commissioner Phillip Martin; Hunt County Maintenance Director Jimmy Moore and the Bowers Sign Company among others for their cooperation in getting the facility up and running.
