The City of Greenville is moving ahead with a street reconstruction project approved by voters earlier this month.
The city is seeking statements of qualifications from firms interested in the first phase of the effort, which includes the rebuilding of Stonewall Street between Mockingbird Lane and Interstate 30, Sayle Street between Kari Lane and Interstate 30, and Webb Street between Sayle and Wesley Streets.
The statements of qualifications are due to the office of Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim by 2 p.m. June 7.
On May 11, voters approved the issuance of $12.6 million in bonds to pay for the reconstruction of nine local streets. The bond proposition called for rebuilding the above three streets during the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
According to a report issued by Ebrahim’s office earlier this year, the city had held off on rebuilding the section at the south end of Stonewall for several years, awaiting the completion of the Wesley Street overpass project.
Ebrahim has noted the existing pavement is currently narrow in width and has many sub-grade and base failures. The south end of the project will be redesigned to match the new I-30 frontage road and additional right-of-way and easements.
Parallel sewer mains will also have to be replaced under the project, which has been estimated to cost $1.43 million.
Ebrahim said the section of Sayle Street included in the package was never designed to handle the vehicle load it has received since Lowe’s and the adjacent shopping center was constructed, not to mention the traffic coming from the Greenville SportsPark. Cost of the work has been estimated at $920,000.
Webb Street is needing to be rebuilt to help provide the city an additional east/west route between Joe Ramsey and Interstate 30, which also connects two major north/south thoroughfares.
