Unemployment continues to slide

More than 200 new jobs in April

GREENVILLE — More than 200 people found jobs in Hunt County last month, as the local jobless figures remained at the lowest levels seen in five years.

The Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday that the county has added more than 1,000 jobs in the past year and that more people were at work locally last month than during any other April this century.

Hunt County reported an April unemployment rate of 6.1 percent, compared to 6.2 percent in March and down from the 7.9 percent reported in April 2012. The rate was the lowest seen for April since 2008, when local unemployment was reported at 4.3 percent.

There were 2,477 people listed as unemployed in Hunt County in April, a decrease of 41 people since March and 695 fewer than in April 2012.

There were 38,015 people listed as employed locally during April, 217 more than during March. The total represented the highest number of people at work during April in Hunt County since at least April 2000. The county has added 1,056 jobs in the past 12 months.

Hunt County is listed by the Texas Workforce Commission as part of the Dallas-Plano-Irving Metropolitan Division, which also includes Dallas, Collin, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.

Delta County reported the division’s highest unemployment rate during April, at 7.1 percent, Dallas County reported 6.5 percent unemployment and Kaufman County recorded 6.2 percent unemployment.

 Ellis County registered a 5.9 percent unemployment rate during April, Rockwall County posted 5.5 percent unemployment, Collin County reported 5.4 percent unemployment and Denton County recorded the division’s lowest unemployment rate in April, at 5.3 percent.

Among other nearby counties, Fannin County posted an 8.7 percent unemployment rate during April, Hopkins County 5.2 percent, Lamar County 8 percent, Rains County 6.3 percent and Van Zandt County posted a 5.8 percent rate.
