Taking steps in fight against cancer

GREENVILLE — Hundreds of crusaders in the fight against cancer – survivors, people battling the disease, caregivers, friends and volunteers – will converge on T. A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium in Greenville tonight for the 2013 Relay For Life of Hunt County, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

They are contributing their time toward making a cure for cancer a fairy tale come true.

The theme for the 2013 Relay For Life  is “Once Upon A Cure” and participating teams are being invited to dress up as characters from their favorite fairy tale.

The Relay is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., as teams spend the night walking around the track at the stadium, raising money from pledges for each mile completed.

As of Thursday afternoon, 46 teams of 624 participants had raised more than $77,000.

Cancer survivors are honored guests during the event. A “ Survivors Lap” at 7:15 p.m. includes the introduction of each survivor present who all are invited to participate, signifying their victory over cancer and their unified hope for a cancer cure.

A Luminaria Ceremony will be conducted at 9:30 p.m. and is a time to remember people we have lost to cancer, to support people who currently have cancer, and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past.

Those wanting additional information about the Relay can contact Mark Bradford at mark.bradford@cancer.org or by calling 214-819-1209.
