Extravaganza a success, organizers say

GREENVILLE — With the start of the school semester closing in, huge crowds turned out in Greenville Saturday morning, not only to obtain some free school supplies, but to enjoy just a few more hours of summer fun.

Several hundred people were on hand for the fifth annual Back To School Extravaganza at the Boys and Girls Club/Reecy Davis Center, sponsored by the Greenville North Community Association (GNCA) and hosted by Love and Faith Fellowship Church.

“Everybody was here early, early early,” said organizer Emily Cozine Thompson with the GNCA.

Long lines of children and their parents had formed on the grounds of the building well before the scheduled 9 a.m. start time, most of whom had preregistered for backpacks filled with school supplies. Others came for school uniforms or free haircuts which were provided on a first come, first served basis.

Thompson said the event was an overwhelming success.

“It has been five years and I am glad to see we are still building on our dream,” Thompson said. “I appreciate the people who participated with us to make a positive image of North Greenville.”

There was a lot more going on than just handing out school supplies, as Grace and Mercy Funeral Home set up an inflatable bounce house, Goodwill Baptist Church was offering free face painting, the Boys and Girls Club provided games and other organizations gave away items during the event. The games, raffles and other activities were available to anyone who attended the Extravaganza.

During the morning, Thompson gave a special tribute to Kristi Horne with Tools For School for joining with the GNCA on the Extravaganza. Bill Wright with KKVI radio was presented a “Spirit of the Community” award for providing a live radio broadcast.
