Solemn service

GREENVILLE — A brief, solemn memorial service was held for Alicia Moore Saturday afternoon at the Greenville intersection of Walnut and Bourland streets — where the 16-year-old girl was last seen getting off a school bus one year ago.

About 20 friends and relatives — most of them wearing purple, Alicia’s favorite color — gathered for the memorial service and a balloon release.

The memorial service was organized by Jessica Byrd, Alicia’s aunt.

Byrd said the service was organized “to bring awareness that one year ago, on this day, someone’s life was lost, lost, never to be seen again on a beautiful day, much like today.”

After a prayer by the Rev. Philip Williams, associate minister of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, a dozen purple balloons were released. Williams said the balloons were a “token of love.”

There were 12 balloons, Byrd said, to mark 2012, the year of Alicia’s death.

Alicia’s body was found in Van Zandt County four days after her disappearance.

Michael Moore, Alicia’s uncle, was arrested on May 6 and faces capital murder charges. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in Van Zandt County Jail.
